Last Mountain Distillery | Single Cask, Single Malt | 6.5YO, 45% ABV

It’s #WhiskyWednesday and I’m mixing things up, with a Canadian Single Malt review! 🍁

Based in Lumsden, the @LMDistillery proudly boasts that their spirit is 100% Saskatchewan made. Using solely provincially sourced barley, their award-winning non-chill filtered Single Malt Whisky is bottled at 45% ABV, after being aged for 78 months in an ex-bourbon barrel, with a finishing period in virgin oak.

Let’s get to the tasting, eh?

Appearance | golden prairie hues, with beautiful clarity.

Nose | an intriguing initial bouquet, has piqued my interest! Sweeter notes, that of custard with a dusting of freshly cracked black pepper, are accompanied by festive spices, toffee, and orchard fruits – namely pears. Lightly toasted bread with salted butter and drizzle of honey, is met by starchy pasta water and marshmallow powder, then, suddenly, an aroma reveals itself which took me ages to decipher… creamed corn!

Palate | the mouthfeel is light and oily, with a peppery sichuan tingle. This is rather “out there”, but, visiting my 100 year old Granny and being given a Werther’s from her antique (or ancient) varnished, wooden pantry. 🤪 There are notes of luscious orchard fruits (apricots) and sultanas alongside toasted hazelnuts, with spicy white pepper, and foam banana sweets.

This dram is decidedly sweet and not overly complex, just a pleasant everyday sipper and wonderful introduction to this Canadian distillers’ craft!

Thank you for sharing this winsome expression with me, @CDNWhiskyMaker. 😊

Sláinte Mhath! 🥃
