When I think of @TheGlenturretWhisky, I am reminded of the fantastic experience touring the distillery and tasting whiskies in the dunnage warehouse with Managing Director, John Laurie!
I was taken aback by distillery’s rich history and their focus on small batch production, using only the finest ingredients and traditional whisky production methods. It was amazing to see a century old Porteous Malt Mill still in use, and to watch the stillman rousing the mash by hand.
Did you know that Glenturret is the last distillery in Scotland, to use a hand-operated mash tun?
Sharing a few drams with John, one of the first Glenturret expressions I had the pleasure of sampling was the then Peated Edition bottled at 43% ABV. I couldn’t resist opening their new 10 Year Old Peat Smoke expression with an increased ABV of 50%!
Appearance: classic amber, with golden saffron hues.
Nose: wow, what an intriguing bouquet! Burning hickory woodchips are accompanied by demerara, green apple skin, and malty smoked meat aromatics. An earthiness comes to the fore, that of heathery Highland peat, alongside notes of red wine salami, sea salt caramel, mushy peas, and a welcomed fragrant washback facial. There is a soft sweetness, that of Scottish tablet, met by bitter orange pith, and call me crazy – Frazzles crispy bacon crisps.
Palate: an oily mouthfeel coats the tongue, with the buzz of freshly grated horseradish, white pepper, and a charred oak influence. There is no lack of complexity here; heavily smoked meats and peppery brisket burnt ends, served with cowboy beans, this dram has me yearning for a visit to Pinnacle Peak in Tuscon – yeehaw! There is a cereal-like quality (Weetabix) in tandem with yeast breads, brûléed sugars, and the subtle balance of a buttered treacle scone’s bittersweet flavours. The stimulating finish has a prolonged presence on the palate, with notes of earthy peat, caramelized sugars, malt, peppery oak and… kippers?
Thank you to all the hardworking individuals who put their heart and soul in to ensuring that Glenturret remains one of Scotland’s beloved, hidden treasures.
I cannot wait to see these stunning @Lalique bottles on shelves, in BC!
Sláinte! 🥃
