As you may well know, I received a surprise #WhiskyMail package from @ShelterPoint on Monday! 🎁
I could no longer resist temptation, so last night I popped the fancy Vinolok glass top of their ‘The Forbidden’, expression.
A little bit of background; this offering’s name is as an eponym for a local landmark, the Forbidden Plateau. A precipitous plateau in the east of the Vancouver Island Ranges, and former ski hill which closed in 1999, when the roof of the ski lodge collapsed due to heavy snowfall!
As mentioned in my previous post, this is the second batch of their unconventional Single Malt Wheat Whisky! Produced using 100% Canadian malted wheat, this distillate has been seasoned in ex-bourbon American Oak casks, laid to rest for 6 and a half years, and bottled at 47% ABV. 🌾
Let’s get to the review now, eh? 🍁
APPEARANCE: pallid blonde hue, with hints of gold.
NOSE: okay, wow, there is quite a lot going on here! An inviting sweetness comprised of sprinkled demerara on raw homemade shortcrust pastry dough, warm Butter Tarts with vanilla ice cream, eating Sun-Maid raisins while my Granda handles pipe tobacco, hay, banana skins, and Weetabix cereal. Delicate floral notes come to the fore, accompanied by a slight medicinal quality. Germolene is that you?
PALATE: luxurious tongue coating oily mouthfeel, with an oaky Sichuan peppercorn kick! Heather honey on a well-toasted croissant, salted caramel drizzle, Pecan pie made with a generous amount of warming spices, demerara and maple syrup, yeast and malty notes, a Nanaimo Bar-esque coconutty sweetness, and the freshly cut green green grass of home. The light and warming finish is an amalgamation of toasty oak, butterscotch pudding, coarse black pepper, pure vanilla, and malt.
Well, I just might have to enjoy another dram for #ThirstyThursday! 🤪
